Amazon consulting
When should an Amazon brand hire a consultant?
Start with the decision you cannot resolve
Hiring an Amazon consultant makes sense when your team needs a clear diagnosis, an outside perspective or a plan it can execute. Before looking for a provider, write down the decision you need help making. “Grow our Amazon sales” is an ambition. “Identify why our main products receive traffic but convert poorly” is a problem someone can investigate.
This framework separates three needs: understanding the problem, deciding what to change and doing the ongoing work. You may need consulting for the first two, account management for the third, or a clearly defined combination.
Check the basics before buying more traffic
Amazon’s Sponsored Products guide connects advertising readiness to product availability, the Featured Offer and the quality of the detail page. Start by checking whether customers can buy the product and whether the page answers their questions. An advertising problem may also involve inventory, pricing or an unclear offer.
Review the listing’s images, product information and relevant search terms. Amazon also discusses those foundations in its guide to improving listings. More traffic gives more shoppers a chance to evaluate the same page; it does not remove every reason they might hesitate.
The practical question is where the next hour of work belongs. A consultant should help connect the evidence across the account and explain which uncertainty to resolve first.
Gather a useful starting brief
You do not need a perfect report before asking for help. You do need enough context to distinguish an observed problem from an assumption.
- State the marketplace, product range and decision you need to make.
- Record the period covered by each report and any stockouts, price changes or promotions during it.
- Separate advertising results from total account sales so the two are not confused.
- Describe the work already attempted, who owns it and what changed afterward.
- List missing information explicitly, including product costs or data your team cannot yet access.
Keep comparisons consistent. If one period includes a promotion and another includes a stockout, the difference may need explanation before it becomes a conclusion about campaign quality.
Choose the scope of help
A diagnostic project should leave you with a documented problem, the evidence supporting it, the uncertainties still open and a proposed order of work. That is useful when your team can implement changes but needs direction.
A focused implementation project should name the changes, the person responsible, the approval process and the evidence used to assess the result. For example, a listing project might cover a particular group of products rather than the entire account.
Ongoing management needs a different agreement. Define which activities the provider owns, how often it reports and which decisions remain with your team. Clarify the handoff between advertising, inventory and content so an issue does not sit between responsibilities.
Ask for a plan you can inspect
Before committing, ask how the provider would investigate your stated problem. Look for a clear explanation of the first data it needs, the limits of that evidence and the decisions the analysis is intended to support.
Ask what the deliverable will contain and how recommendations become approved changes. Confirm how account access is granted, who keeps ownership of the account and how you will receive the work if the engagement ends.
A useful proposal makes the next step concrete. It should explain what will be investigated or changed without treating an estimated outcome as a guaranteed result.
Decide whether the timing is right
Consulting can be useful when you have a consequential decision, conflicting explanations or a recurring problem your team has not resolved. If the immediate task is already clear and someone can complete it, start there and assess what remains.
If you need help both choosing priorities and carrying out the work, discuss those responsibilities together. Keep the diagnosis visible so ongoing activity stays connected to the problem you hired someone to solve.
Your next step
Write a one-page brief with your decision, current constraints and available evidence. Use it to compare the scope proposed by each provider.
